This year has been one of ups and downs. Back at the end of January, to distract myself from everything else in the world, I buried myself in my laptop and wrote 12,000 words to finish a fun little story called Curse of the Dragonflower. It definitely wasn’t the book I was supposed to be working on, but it was fun and escapist and sweet and the rush of completing the story gave me enough motivation to face the next few months with a little more heart.
Still, after a few weeks of ignoring the edits I needed to make to it, that rush slowly melted away. I forgot about during spring as I was drowning in qualifying exams and constant meetings with university faculty about how to protect students when the university is under attack from both outside and within.
This summer, nothing seems much better. Facing an uncertain future, I decided to return to that day of marathon writing and escapism and dig out Curse of the Dragonflower once more. I cleaned it up and posted it and now I feel a little bit silly because why didn’t I do this months ago? It was so easy, and putting it out into the world is the best feeling in the world.
This story is so special to me for a million different reasons, not least because of the peace and happiness it brought me back in January. It’s a cozy reflection of a world where everyone always has a happy ending and magical mysteries abound. It’s sweet and silly and dramatic, with everything from childhood crushes to murderous assassins to an unexpectedly long tribute scene to my inability to boil an egg.
Publishing this story has motivated me to return to some of my older stories that I had set aside, so I hope to have a few very exciting announcements coming up soon! But for now, Curse of the Dragonflower is out and available on Kindle Unlimited, and I really hope you’ll love it as much as I do.
Love,
Sofia
